Opera appreciation
- 2 sessions: the first begins June 21/22 and the second August 5
These sessions are for those who seek a first-hand appreciation of opera: in terms of theatre, language, music and context – with time to relax at a four-star hotel in the hills near Lucca between performances.
IMPORTANT: In order to purchase tickets, registration for these sessions must be confirmed as early as possible. Earlier registration guarantees better seating.
| First session June 21/22 |

|
For the session beginning Friday June 22, we will meet directly in Verona (hotel to be announced) and spend one night there, seeing the opera Nabucco. However, if you decide to fly to Pisa, we will pick you up on June 21 and take you to your hotel at Castelvecchio Pascoli, then proceed by bus to Verona. On June 23, after our return by coach to Castelvecchio (in time for lunch) there will be time for relaxation – a swim in the pool, a visit to the hotel’s health spa, or a game of tennis perhaps?
On June 24 we will have an afternoon tour of two or three local villages (Barga, Vetriano, Celle dei Puccini). Barga and Vetriano have charming small opera houses. Celle contains the Puccini museum. |
Monday June 25th we leave after lunch for Florence, allowing time for museums, shopping or a meal before the opera Die Walküre at the Maggio Musicale. We will return to Castelvecchio Pascoli after the opera (the trip takes about 90 minutes).
Tuesday morning June 26th will be devoted to relaxation, followed by a visit to Lucca in the afternoon, to attend a lyric concert at the Basilica of S. Giovanni.
Wednesday there is time to enjoy your hotel and visit a local village. Departure is scheduled for Thursday morning after breakfast, when you will be accompanied to Pisa. (Delta flights from Pisa to JFK leave at 1:35 p.m..)
Please note: Meals in Verona and Florence are not included in the price. Plan to spend at least 15 to 30 euros for each meal (plus wine). Box lunch by request. Single supplement in Verona, if desired, is also priced separately. |
| Second session August 5 |

|
The second one-week session begins Saturday August 4th, when we meet you at Pisa airport and accompany you to the hotel. After a relaxing morning, time to enjoy the swimming pool or take a walk, we travel to Torre del Lago to attend the opera La Bohème (August 5). If time permits, we can visit Puccini’s home and museum.
Then we return to Castelvecchio Pascoli for several days of relaxation and study. |
In the evenings, those who wish to can view sub-titled videotapes of Madame Butterfly (filmed at Verona Arena) and La Bohème (La Scala), both directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will offer afternoon visits to local villages such as Barga, Castelnuovo Garfagnana, and Vetriano – each with its own opera house (Vetriano’s is the smallest in the world). We will invite guest speakers such as an opera journalist and a local opera manager.
On Thursday August 9 at Torre del Lago we see the opera Tosca. And on Friday August 10, La Rondine . En route we may enjoy a short tour of Lucca. Saturday after breakfast we will accompany you to Pisa Airport for the flight home.
